"The Last Lesson" ByAlphonse Daudet Summary Class 12 English
The story 'The Last Lesson' is a very interesting chapter of the book. The story is written by Alphonse Daudet. It is related to the Franco-Prussian War(1870-1871), and the result ended with the defeat of France by Prussia led by Bismarck.
There is a French boy named Franz who is narrating the story. He was in a hurry to go to the school that morning. Somehow, he was late for the classes. On his way, he was very afraid of his French teacher M Hamel, he would be questioning him on participles. And he was not at all prepared for it. First, he thought to bunk the classes and to roam on the road, but unwillingly he was moving toward his school in a rush.
When he was passing through the market, he saw a huge crowd near the bulletin board. He wanted to know the reason as all the important news of the war were published on the bulletin board, but he was already late for the classes. So he decided to move on in a rush. The blacksmith after watching Franz asked him to go slowly to the school as he has plenty of time to reach his school. Franz felt confused after hearing this. But he focused on his way. Normally, when the school began, there was a lot of noise, but Franz was shocked to see that school was so quiet that day. It seemed to be a Sunday morning. There was no beating of a metal ruler, no gossip, and also no one was reciting work.
Franz, with his puzzled mind, entered the classroom. He was very frightened to face Mr. Hamel, but today the tone of M Hamel was different. He softly asked Franz to take his seat. When Franz scrolled eyes all over the classroom, he got more ridiculous. As he saw some villagers have grabbed those last benches of the classroom, which were often empty, Postmaster, Hauser, and all the people looked sad, And also, Mr. Hamel was in a special dress which he wore only on Inspection day or Prize day He was charming in his beautiful green coat and a small silk hat.
M Hamel started the class and looked to be very heavy-hearted. He told that this is his last Franch class as the Prussian won Alsace and Lorraine, and now only German was to be taught in the school. So M.Hamel has to leave school and a new German teacher was arriving the next day. Franz, who always felt M.Hamel's class a boring one, suddenly started feeling sorry for him and for himself too. He realized that he hasn't learned any lesson properly. He forgot about M Hamel's ruler and his strictness. And now he was realizing why those last benches were occupied by villagers and the fine dresses of M.Hamel were also for the same reason. Those villagers had come to bow for Mr. Hamel, for those worthy services of forty years.
Mr. Hamel took the class, he told every student to recite something, but Franz was unable to recite. But he didn't scold him, he blamed parents and even himself for this reason, that they didn't take their studies seriously. Then he explained the beauty of the French language. He also explained that we should never forget this language. Then some grammar and writing lessons were taught.
Everyone was upset. M Hamel was gazing all over the class with watery eyes. His sister was packing stuff for their dispersal. The noise was so loud to reach the classroom. They were leaving the country on the very next day.
When the class was over, it was 12'o clock, they chanted payers. Everyone was almost crying for that beloved gentleman. At the very moment, Prussian soldiers were returning from the drill. Their trumpets were very unpleasant to everyone. Mr. Hamel wanted to say something, But he was not able to say anything as he was chocked up.
He took a piece of chalk and wrote "Vive la France !" on the board. And he made a gesture of dispersal with his hand.
