Poets and Pancakes is a short piece of literature taken from the book 'My Years with the boss' which is written by Ashokamitran
The story belongs to the starting golden era of the Indian film industry. Writer, Ashokamitran worked in Gemini studio. His boss was S.S. Vasan, Gemini studio was established in 1940 in Madras, which had more than 600 working staff. There used to make Tamil movies, which influenced many lives.

The writer tells us about his job in Gemini studio, his work was to collect paper clippings and file it for further use. Then the poet talks about the scene of the Gemini studio and mostly those heavy makeups which were used there. The pancake was the name of the brand of the makeup materials and they were brought as truck loads.
Then the poet describes the makeup rooms which were always ready with so many lights. He says that the actor and actress had a real struggle in the makeup room while bearing those heavy makeup loads. Poets say that makeup is just used to destroy the real beauty of actors and actresses, they make them ugly. He also describes the hierarchy, which was followed in the make up department. The best or the chief make up artist used to do the makeup of leading actor and actress, junior makeup man used to make junior artists ugly. And the office boy used to throw the makeup on the face of artists who all used to be part of the crowd.
There is another character named Subbu, He belonged to the Brahmin family. He was a very resourceful person. He could do every work, He could act, write stories, song, direct, narrate and hence he was a perfect man for the film industry. He was a sort of great creative person. He worked for everyone. He wanted to be an actor but he couldn't and the reason behind it was his nature. He could work hard for others but cannot for himself. He was always ready to help somebody in any moment or situation, but he would never do it for his own sake. He was not much educated so this was also the reason for the failure of this young talented boy.
Subbu was a very loyal person with extraordinary creativity. He had also great fame in poetry. He wrote many poems in folk styles. Although he was an open-minded man with a very big heart. Subbu was always seen with the boss, but formally his attendance was recorded under the story department.
Then the writer mentions the story of an English poet who visited Gemini studio. The whole studio was much excited for the welcoming of the guest and royal preparations were done. The poet visited the studio, a function was held for him, he gave a long speech to the crowd, while no one understood it. And no one knew the exact reason for his arrival except few upper heads of the departments.
After sometimes when the writer was collecting paper clipping he found something about that poet who visited Gemini studio. He was none other than Stephen spender who has written many pieces of texts about the failure of communism. Now Ashokamitran understood the reason for his visit, it was related to his anti-communist perspective.
