Summary of The Little Girl
Living with her father, mother, and grandma, the small child Kezia tells the narrative. She constantly tries to avoid her father, however, as she is terrified of him. When he heads out for work, she even becomes relieved.
Kezia describes her father as an austere and distant guy. Talking to him, she stammers because he appears critical and demanding. To help her better understand her parents, her grandma urges her to spend more time with them. But Kezia discovers them chilly and aloof every time she attempts to engage with them.
Her grandma advises Kezia one day to construct a pincushion for her father's birthday present. Kezia, eager, stitches three sides of the cushion and searches for something to pack it with. She shreds some paper sheets she discovers in her mother's room into little bits to cover the cushion.
It's unfortunate that Kezia didn't realize that these documents included her father's important Port Authority address. When her father discovers what she's done, he becomes quite enraged. He hammers her palms with a ruler after ignoring her explanation. Kezia feels deeply offended and questions the reason for her punishment, even after acknowledging her mistake. Broken, she asks, "Why did God make fathers?"
She once observed Mr. Macdonald, her neighbor, laughing broadly with his kids. Kezia discovers not all dads are as strict as he laughs and delights with them. She begins to wonder why some dads, like Mr. Macdonald, are kind and gentle while others—like her father—are tough and demanding.
