The Lost Child: An Introduction

The story concentrates on a small child visiting a fair with his parents. Overjoyed and bursting with energy, he longs to have everything he sees—from toys to sweets displayed in the stores. His parents, in the meantime, refuse to meet his expectations. He unintentionally wanders away from them and loses his way while investigating the energetic fair. Knowing he is alone causes panic to sweep over his head. Later, when a charming stranger presents him the very things he had been yearning for, he declines them all in search of simply the solace of his parents.

The Lost Child: Summary

The narrative takes place during the spring festival, when the surroundings exude delight and excitement. Riding by foot, horseback, bamboo, and bullock carts, people excitedly head towards the fair. Among them is a small, inquisitive, and delighted child accompanying his parents. His parents are more concerned with getting to the fair than he is with appreciating the beauty of nature en route.

His enthusiasm is unbounded as he arrives at the fair. Every turn, every stall captivates him. He finds himself pulled to the toy stores and candy sellers. Knowing his father's severe character, he pauses even though he wants to own those delicious delicacies.

His mother tries to take his mind elsewhere. Still, the youngster often lags behind because he is enthralled with the sights and sounds. He yearns for the surroundings' attractions time and time again, but his parents' rejection depresses him. He becomes enthralled with the ornamental displays as they keep on, mouth salivating at the sight of sweets coated in gold and silver foils.

"I long for burfi," he murmured to himself. He silently advances, though he knows his request will be ignored even before he begs. Then his eyes settle on a beautiful garland of Gulmohar, but he holds back from asking. Not too long afterward, vibrant balloons grab his eye and set him on an insatiable need to own them all. He limits himself, though, thinking his parents would find him too old for balloons.

He finds a snake charmer singing melodic tunes going forward. Though he is afraid his parents might object, the lad wants to stop and listen but is not brave enough to say so. He finds a way to express his interest. This time, unable to contain his excitement, he yells out to his parents. He turns back without receiving a response, only to discover their absence.

Fear paralyses him as he searches fervently but finds no one among the throng. He comes to the realisation that he has vanished. He sobs relentlessly, and tears flow down his face. A good man notices the upset child and offers candy, balloons, and garlands in an attempt to calm him down. Now, though, nothing interests him. He just wants to be with his parents once more.
