SUMMARY: On the Face of It Class 12 Summary
Derry, a little boy whose face is half burned from an acid accident, runs away into a yard to get away from the mean people, which is how the story begins. He thinks that people only see his scars and not who he is on the inside. In the garden, he meets Mr. Lamb, the older man who owns the land, out of the blue. During the war, Mr. Lamb lost one of his legs and now walks with a tin leg.
At first, Derry doesn't want to be on someone else's land and feels bad about it. On the other hand, Mr. Lamb meets him warmly and tells him to stay. As they talk, Derry talks about his pain and worries. In front of Mr. Lamb, he tells him how his family treats him differently and how other people avoid him. He also says that he has grown angry and bitter.
Mr. Lamb patiently talks about times when kids made fun of him because he had a tin leg. But Mr. Lamb has chosen to stay positive and happy, unlike Derry. He believes that everyone should enjoy life, that everyone should be able to enter, and that how someone looks shouldn't matter. His words slowly change Derry's mind and make him more motivated.
Before he leaves, Mr. Lamb asks Derry to help him pick crab apples from the trees. Desry promises to come back after telling his mother, even though she doesn't agree. He wants to show that he can make his own choices and keep his word.
Derry finds Mr. Lamb lying still under a ladder in the end. Mr. Lamb tried to pick the apples by himself because he thought Derry would not come back. He died, which was sad, and he fell. Desry is heartbroken, and he knows how important the connection they had and the things Mr. Lamb taught him during that short time were.
CONCLUSION: On the Face of It Class 12 Summary
"On the Face of It" makes a strong point about how looks can be deceptive and how they shouldn't be used to judge someone. As it stresses the importance of kindness, self-confidence, and connecting with others. The figure of Mr. Lamb shows us that acceptance and hope can shine even in the worst situations. The story has a sad ending, but it teaches us a powerful lesson: real beauty is inside, and everyone should be treated with respect and honour.
