This odd story focuses on Charley, a 31-year-old guy who one day discovers himself on a strange third level of Grand Central Station—a level that is not meant to exist. Realising the chance, he attempts to purchase train tickets for himself and his wife Louisa to Galesburg, Illinois, wishing to begin a new life in that more basic era. The money is old, though, so he cannot buy it.
Charley, who is set on coming back, changes his savings to old-style money in spite of the monetary loss. But when he gets back to Grand Central, he can't locate the third level once more. His conduct concerns Louisa as well as his psychiatrist buddy Sam, who believes Charley's mind has manufactured this delusion as a coping tool to flee the severity of contemporary life. Later, while going through his stamp collection to unwind, Charley finds a letter from Sam, who had just vanished. Postmarked from Galesburg in 1894, the letter claims Sam has discovered the third level and encourages Charley and Louisa to continue looking for it.
